Gerhard Fourie holds a master’s degree in atmospheric chemistry and a doctorate degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of the North-West. He spent 14 years’ service in the Atmospheric Impact Research group at Sasol Technology Research and Development in Sasolburg, South Africa. The main objective of the group was to assist Sasol Operations in identification and assessment of environmental impacts emanating from atmospheric emission sources by means of (1) sampling, analysis & assessment of atmospheric emissions – to determine the risk & environmental footprint; (2) atmospheric modelling (dispersion- & transformation modelling) to assess the distribution and footprint associated to emission sources, as well as source apportionment of ambient concentrations; (3) technical assistance to Sasol Technology into improvement of existing designs/or proposed control technologies to mitigate atmospheric emissions; (4) technical & specialist assistance to Sasol Technology into EIA’s regarding expansions/modifications and new projects or facilities. The group also performed specialist baseline and ambient air quality studies.

On leaving Sasol Technology R&D he joined C&M Consulting Engineers for 18 months and EnviroNgaka (Pty) Ltd for a period of 4 years and 9 months, before joining Mamadi & Company SA (Pty) Ltd on 3 January 2020.

He currently holds the position of Executive: Air Quality with Mamadi & Company SA (Pty) Ltd, an environmental consulting company which specialises in the field of air quality management. As an atmospheric dispersion and transformation modelling specialist, his key responsibilities include the management, implementation and provision of specialist technical input and assistance for a range of air quality related projects. His typical projects include baseline and strategic scenario ambient air quality assessments, atmospheric impact assessments, emissions quantification / atmospheric emissions inventory development, atmospheric risk assessments, air quality management planning, regulatory/legal requirements and assessing abatement/control technology options and impacts on behalf of clients.

He has over 25 years of experience in the air quality and atmospheric science field, having completed and managed numerous specialist projects, as well as air quality and impact assessments, and provided best practice guidance to both industry and all tiers of government.

During his career Gerhard Fourie served on the following committees:

• Member of the NACA Vaal-Triangle Branch Steering Committee;
• Branch Chairman of the NACA Northern Branch (2014 – 2017).
• SABS SC146-03 –AIR QUALITY – AMBIENT ATMOSPHERES, Member of the steering committee.
